Mayor Fletcher Bowron of Los Angeles welcomed people to the first Emmy Awards ceremony, which was held Jan. 25, 1949, at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Before there was a Peak TV era, before there were performances from Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman or Julia Louis-Dreyfus, there was Judy Splinters. “Judy Splinters,” a children’s television show hosted by a 20-year-old ventriloquist named Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet — wait for it — Judy Splinters, was nominated for the so-called most popular program at the very first Emmy Awards. All nominated shows had to have been filmed in Los Angeles, and the award show itself was only broadcast on a local station in Los Angeles. “It was so brand-new,” Dinsdale told The Los Angeles Times in 1998.

Most funny people will say that where there’s laughter, there’s usually pain. Louis-Dreyfus knows the reverse is also true. Even while she explores new emotional depths in her work, she can’t help but find the funny. It turns out, you can take the girl out of the comedy, but you can’t take the comedy out of the girl.

JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS is laughing about the time she had to eat Death. Sitting in a Manhattan restaurant, waiting for her poached-eggs-no-home-fries, she’s talking about her role as a fiercely protective mother in her new movie, Tuesday, a visual effects–filled drama in which Death takes the form of a mystical parrot. At one point in the mother’s quest to protect her terminally ill daughter from the bird, she stuffs its entire body into her mouth. Louis-Dreyfus actually chewed black cotton candy to create the moment.

Representatives for Disney, Amazon and Netflix did not immediately respond to requests for comment. And critics seem to say that the quality of content being produced is actually in decline," Khan told The Ankler podcast. AI already has divided studios and striking film and television writers, who want assurances that the emerging technology will not be used to generate scripts. SAG-AFTRA wants to ensure its members can control use of their "digital doubles" and ensure studios pay the actual actors appropriately, said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union's chief negotiator. A representative for the AMPTP had no comment on its position on use of AI with actors. In negotiations with the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the AMPTP proposed discussing the topic once a year, which the Guild viewed as an attempt to avoid the issue. You're never going to see anything like that if we're all using AI."

“You Hurt My Feelings” sums up the Nicole Holofcener experience: funny in its wounded bluntness. Her characters — comfortable New Yorkers and Angelenos — tend to lash out; their preferred approach to honesty is brazenness. But Holofcener is drawn more to the process of healing than she is to the wielding of hurt. By that point the movie’s already shown us what Beth’s and Don’s lives are like, together and apart. One thing that’s probably kept the marriage firm has been saying “I love this” and “it’s great,” when it’s not.
HOLOFCENER I feel that way. Do you usually feel this way right after you’ve finished making a film? HOLOFCENER I’m usually out of ideas every day. LOUIS-DREYFUS I wasn’t thinking about this character as an age thing. LOUIS-DREYFUS To tell you the truth, I feel like this age, there’s just so much more to do.
There's a "new" Elizabeth Holmes in town, at least according to The New York Times. But did her teardown kill the black turtleneck? In March 2015, Glamour magazine asked Elizabeth Holmes about her style and ran a story about her called "Meet the $9 Billion Woman: Career Advice From Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes." Posters of Hulu's "The Dropout" feature Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes, clad, of course, in the signature turtleneck look. Deep down, I don't think Homes killed the black turtleneck — not really.

The Sundance Film Festival was back in person for the first time since 2020. In five days I saw eight films, and while I'm not a critic, I can affirm that not one of them was a clunker. Asked about the film's aspect ratio in an audience Q&A, Jalali said, "It was prettier that way." The bulk of the films I saw were more commercial, and four of them centered on relationships. And then there was "Cat Person," based on a 2017 New Yorker story about dating by Kristen Roupenian.

It was impossible not to feel optimistic about the state of independent film at the opening weekend of the Sundance Film Festival. In five days I saw eight films, and while I'm not a critic, I can affirm that not one of them was a clunker. At an event like Sundance, even amid some hand-wringing over the future, the excitement is contagious.

The Florida Democratic Party noted it has had a Municipal Victory Program since 2016 that includes efforts to fundraise and help school board candidates. Historically, it hasn’t taken a lot of cash to influence school board races, which are generally nonpartisan and often draw low voter turnout. In a 2018 survey, just 9 percent of school board officials reported spending more than $5,000. “What Ron DeSantis is doing in Florida — supporting a bunch of these school board candidates — is really smart, because the No. Some of the liberal efforts to push back against conservatives in school board races are well established.
